About Bikain Istorio Bat (A Great History)

Music Inspired by Basque mythology

Basque mythology is a pre-Indo-European and matriarchal mythology, with the Goddess Mari being the central motif around which many of its legends revolve. Its priestesses, the witches, were demonized with the arrival of Christianity and persecuted, as in the case of Zugarramurdi, although this did not prevent the family worship of the ancestors from continuing to be directed by the etxekoandre (the mother of the home or farmhouse) and their practices of healers were taken up by the emaginak (midwives).

Other figures to highlight are the lamiak, númenes that lived on the banks of the rivers, and the jentillak (literally, pagans); of the latter, only the basajaunak (lords of the forests) and Olentzero, who converted to Christianity, survived the advent of Christ.

The influence of Indo-European beliefs is different depending on the historical territory, because while in the majority the Sun is treated as a feminine divinity (Eguzki amona or grandmother sun) to whom one prays when it sets and is treated with respect, in Vizcaya, probably Due to Celtic influence, he took the form of a male genius under the name of Ekhi.

These beliefs have survived until the 20th century at the hands of Basque artists who were born and grew up with the magic of Basque mythology, often independently in stories or legends and in other cases in idiosyncrasy with Christian beliefs, where the pagan was persecuted and identified with the Devil.
