About Euskal Herriko Kondairak (Legends of the Basque Country)

Music inspired on the legend of Theodosius of Navarre.

In Navarre, before the monarchy of the kings of Navarre was established, a gentleman named Theodosius, Buruzagia (Boss) of the region, married to Mrs. Constanza de Butrón, lived in the Goñi valley. Shortly after their marriage, Theodosius has to leave his house to lead the fight against the Arabs.

Mrs. Constanza was left alone in her palace with Theodosius parents, to whom she had the courtesy to make them sleep in the stately room , she moving her to a smaller one. When Teodosio returned victorious to his castle, the devil appeared to him disguised as Basajaun ("The Lord of the Forests") who made him believe that his wife was cheating on him with a servant.

Theodosius, beside himself, gallops towards his house. At dawn he enters his palace and goes determined and enraged to his matrimonial room with his dagger drawn. He enters the bedroom and repeatedly stabs the two people sleeping in his bed convinced they were her wife and her lover.

Believing that he had avenged the wrong, he leaves the house and, overwhelmed, meets his wife who was leaving of the church. Terrified, he learns that those who slept in his bed and whom he had murdered were his parents. Frightened by the crime, he goes to Pamplona to apologize to the Bishop who, horrified, sends him to Rome so that the Pope himself can absolve him of his sin.

Theodosius, repentant, goes on a pilgrimage to Rome and the Pope absolves him, giving him as a penance the dragging of thick chains until they come loose by a divine miracle. This would be the unequivocal sign of divine forgiveness.

Theodosius, being retired in Aralar, one day saw a great dragon come out of a chasm that threatened to devour him. Theodosius, helpless, fell to his knees and implored the protection of S. Miguel, exclaiming San Miguel worth me!.

At that moment, amidst a great uproar, the Archangel appeared, showing the cross over his head, overcoming and killing the dragon at the cry of (Nor Jaungoikoa bezala!) Who is like God!

At that very moment, Theodosius was freed from his chains, forgiven by God, who gave him a relic.

Once free, he returned to his house in Goñi where his wife was waiting for him. And both, grateful to God, erected a sanctuary to the Archangel on top of Aralar, which they called San Miguel in Excelsis.
