About Folka

Music inspired by dances and popular music from various cultures.

Folk, derived from the German expression Volk, which means "the town as a whole", the term folk, applied to music, dance and cultural expressions is rather recent. Some reports speak of "folklore" as a term that the English William Thoms used, in 1846, to describe the traditions, customs and superstitions of the uneducated classes. But it had already been applied by Johann Gottfried Herder to popular and national music a century earlier.

Folk music had its echo in Europe from the end of the 1960s, in two clearly differentiated currents:
On the one hand, there are the author song and the protest song.
On the other hand, there is contemporary folk music focused on recovering and adapting traditional folk music to the new times, with special attention to instrumental music. This current is the one that is currently most associated with the concept of folk music.
