About Tawantinsuyu

Music inspired by Pre-Hispanic Inca culture and folklore

The Inca empire was the largest empire in pre-Columbian America. The territory covered by the empire was called Tawantinsuyo or Tahuantinsuyo (in Quechua: Tawantin suyu, lit. 'the four regions or divisions') and the period of its rule is known as the Inca or Incario. It arose in the region of the Peruvian Andes between the XV and XVI centuries as a consequence of the expansion of the curacazgo of Cuzco, being the second historical stage and the period of greatest apogee of the Inca civilization.

The origins of the empire go back to the victory of the multi-ethnic groups, led by Pachacútec against the Chanca confederation in Yawarpampa in 1438. In this stage, the Inca civilization achieved the maximum expansion of its culture, technology and science, developing its own knowledge and that of others to the Andean region, as well as assimilating those of other conquered states.

The Incas considered their king, the Sapa Inca, as the "son of the sun". Many local forms of worship persisted in the empire, most of them related to the sacred local Huacas, but the Inca leaders encouraged the sun cult of Inti, their sun god, and imposed their sovereignty over other cults such as that of Pachamama.
