About Zugarramurdi

Music Inspired on the story of the Zugarramurdi witches.

Zugarramurdi is a municipality in the Autonomous Community of Navarra, located in the district of Pamplona, in the Baztán region and 83 km from the capital of the community, Pamplona. The municipality is made up of five entities: Azcar, Echartea, Madaria, Olazur and Zugarramurdi.

Legend: It is said that the word "Akelarre" comes from the meadow that is next to one of the Zugarramurdi caves, it was where the meetings of the witches were allegedly held. According to legend, in the meadow that was next to the cave grazed a great black goat (male black goat or Akerbeltz, in Basque), which they said transformed into a person when the witches met. In other words, according to legend, this male goat was the devil himself. Hence, Zugarramurdi receives the nickname of the Cathedral of the Devil.

Brujas de Zugarramurdi is the name by which the most famous case in the history of Basque witchcraft and possibly witchcraft in Spain is known. The focus of witchcraft was found in the town of Zugarramurdi in the Navarran Pyrenees and the process was brought by the court of the Spanish Inquisition in Logroño. In the auto de fe celebrated in that city on November 7 and 8, 1610, eighteen people were reconciled because they confessed their guilt and appealed to the mercy of the court, but the six who resisted were burned alive and five in effigy because They had died as a result of the torture they received.
